Stephen Hawking

Lucasian professorship in mathematics

Born in January of 1942 in Oxford, England
Stephen Hawking was born in January of 1942 in Oxford, England. He grew up near London attended Oxford, from which he received his B.A. in 1962. He later attended and Cambridge, where he received his doctorate in theoretical physics. He has held the Lucasian professorship in mathematics at Cambridge since 1979. The Lucasian professorship in mathematics is very chair that was once held by Sir Isaac Newton.

Hawking suffers from incurable motor neuron disease similar to MS that has left him wheelchair bound for a great deal of his life, and in his latter years without the ability to speak. He uses a complex computer system that tracks eye movements and a vocoder to communicate and work in everyday life. To many this would be an ailment, but Hawking has turned this into an advantage. He states it simply gives him the greater ability to be reflexive and to think about physics and the Universe.

Hawking has written several books directed at the common man for understanding of the universe. Recommendations would include "A Brief History of Time" as starters, and also "The Universe in a Nutshell." These are not simple books and must be read carefully to get the full aspect of the involved mathematics. Once you grasp these you can move on to "Black Holes and Baby Universes and Other Essays" and maybe take a look at Einsteins "Relativity."
