The secret to this movie is do not view the domestic "US Import" version. The voices were dubbed and parts of an alternative soundtrack have been added. It is suggested to obtain the new DVD release in widescreen with the original soundtrack and actor's voices. This movie is one of the most groundbreaking action movies of the 70's. It also was one of the Debut Movies for Mel Gibson who was rumored to have only earned 15,000$ salary for shooting the entire movie.

The movie is set in rural Australia in a time where world events and economics are contributing to the downfall of law, order, and society in general. Max (Mel Gibson) is a member of the "Motor Force Patrol" which is in a constant battle with marauding gangs which terrorize and feed off society.

Max's will to fight slowly erodes and culminates with the near death and maiming of his friend Jim Goose (Steve Bisley). He takes his family away to the country only to face unseen horrors there that drive him to be the "Mad Max" we all know and love. An important factor in this movie is it sets up the next and better-known movie "The Road Warrior". Fans of the Road Warrior movie will love this flick because of the continuity material it gives. The origin of Max's car, shotgun, and leg brace are just several of the items you can catch. Hard core movie fanatics will debate whether "The Great Humungus" in the Road Warrior is actually Jim Goose recovered and fled to the wasteland.

The movie stars Mel Gibson (Mad Max), Joanne Samuel (Jessie Rockatansky), Hugh Keays-Byrne (Toecutter), Steve Bisley (Jim Goose), and Roger Ward (Fifi Macaffee) among others.
